One fun, potentially predictable, fact about my sister and me is that we are obsessed with the Great British Baking Show. Many days in the bakery have been spent discussing the delicious bakes we have seen, our favorite contestants, and how we believe we would fare on the show ourselves. But the reason I believe the show has gained such a cult following is not just because so many people love to bake; but also because the show exudes a certain aesthetic, one that really puts you at ease. Often when I have had a stressful day, just watching my favorite past episodes can put my mind at rest.
As someone who has a love of all things in the tent, I have compiled a list of items that I believe any bake-off fan would be ecstatic to own. This list ranges from items that will help you create your own British Baking aesthetic in your kitchen, as well as tools that will help you reach your own star baker potential.
For the Perfect Pastel Bake Off Aesthetic
This selection of gifts focuses on achieving that playful, colorful aesthetic of the tent. Each item is one that has stood the test of having both style and substance. Just these few embellishments to your kitchen can really get you excited to start baking.
THE Mason Cash Mixing Bowl
These are the very bowls used on the show by the GBBO bakers, and also in the Downton Abbey Kitchen. Good news, they are not just a pretty face. These are high quality mixing bowls that not only look great sitting on your kitchen counter, but also perform beautifully when mixing up your favorite recipes. They have many different color options that really go with any kitchen. Bright purples and pastel blues to feel like the tent, or a more traditional cream and forest green for your more minimalistic friends. You can buy them as individual Mason Cash bowls or as a complete set. The perfect gifts for both die-hard fans as well as serious bakers.
Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer
This is a pricier gift, but if you are looking for a higher price point this is perfect. This is the mixer I personally own and have used for years. My mother also has one, and we always have at least one in use for all our baking classes at the Flour Barn. In addition to being quality, long lasting mixers, they can be ordered in the most gorgeous colors. My personal favorites right now are the pistachio, lavender, and dried rose painted ones. They will be lovely in any Great British Baking Show Lover’s kitchen.
New Stand Mixer Bowls
Maybe the fan in your life already has a stand mixer with the typical stainless-steel bowl. A great way to add a little piece of the tent is by softening the look with a new bowl. GBBS bakers are often seen using clear glass mixer bowls, but I believe ceramic and white would also give off Great British Bake-off aesthetics.
A Star Baker Apron
Every true GBBO fan needs a great apron that sets the mood as they start on a batch of cookie dough or a loaf of bread worthy of a Hollywood Handshake! Although they wear a very simple tan apron in the show, I think these particular aprons match the whole aesthetic of the show. They are also full coverage, so they do a great job of protecting your clothing. I have them in several colors, as you can see…
To Become A Star Baker
While setting the tone of the kitchen is important, the bake is what really matters. Whether you are trying a new recipe from Nadiya Bakes or repeating some classic recipes, here are some tools that can help you achieve perfection.
A Thermapen
My number one favorite tool in the kitchen is the Thermapen. Bakers underestimate how important internal temperature can be to a bake. In fact, every bake has its own unique internal temperature. Think of all the under baked cakes or soggy bottoms that could have been avoided! Most people see internal thermometers as something made for meats, but I use it constantly for biscuits, scones, quiche, bread, etc. This brand is tried and true and we use it in our bakery everyday! In fact, we’ve had the same two Thermapens since we opened three years ago. I cannot recommend them enough.
A Kitchen Scale
Prue Leith is always reminding the bakers that they want consistency. They want each of the signature sweet treats or savory bakes to all look identical. But when baking from home this probably seems impossible. One very useful tool is a reliable kitchen scale. If you measure the weight of each cookie, bun, or even cupcake, they will turn out the same size. A scale also ensures that you are following the exact same recipe each time. In addition, having a scale to measure ingredients keeps your workspace clean. Imagine, instead of measuring a cup of peanut butter then dumping it into the bowl, all you have to do is scoop the right weight directly into the bowl. No middleman.
Dutch Oven
From baking sourdough bread, to creating a blackberry compote, to making a soup to pair with my bread bowls, my Dutch oven is one of the most used items in my kitchen. If you are looking for a Dutch oven primarily for bread baking, then I recommend one that is cast iron, non-enameled. Here is one we use at the bakery for Sourdough. Enameled cast iron like the ones made by Le Creuset or Lodge, are lovely, but the temperatures required for sourdough bread can be damaging to the enamel over time.
However, for things like compotes, pastry fillings, and soup the enameled Dutch oven is a wonderful addition to the kitchen. In addition to being highly functional, they can also be such an aesthetic piece to just have sitting on your stovetop. This Dutch Oven is a lovely example. I have one in steel blue, and I love it.

Cake-Decorating Kits
If you know your baker has been wanting to try their hand at cake decorating, then they are definitely going to need a kit. Kits for cake decorating are very affordable and come with everything to make the decorating process as simple as possible.
Cookbooks
I can really get lost in a good cookbook, and each of these books is full of new ideas and techniques. Every person is different when it comes to what they want in a cookbook. Knowing if your favorite baker is looking to master technical challenges or just wanting to learn the best recipes from their favorite bakers makes your job even easier. Here is a collection of cookbooks from some amazing bakers.
Books by Paul Hollywood
You may not know who he is, but fans of the show definitely will. There are so many options for good books by Paul Hollywood, and on several different topics. For bakers who love to bake bread, Polly Hollywood’s Bread is a great option. For just a great general baking book, A Baker’s Life is one of his newer books and includes his favorite childhood bakes as well as his favorite five-star bakes.
Nadiya Bakes
Nadiya Hussain is a past baker on the Great British Baking Show who has become very well-known and has even had a show on Netflix. This book covers everything from cake, to pie, to scones. It is also a beautiful book to have on your shelf or the coffee table.
Bouchon Bakery
I had to include this book because it is my all time favorite book. I have learned so much from this book not only about baking but about how to run your kitchen in the most efficient way. It is a beautiful addition to any collection.
